How to Incorporate Negative Calorie Foods into Your Diet

In the last article, I had written about negative calorie foods, and explained the benefits of incorporating such foods into your diet. Eating negative calorie fruits and foods is the best way I know to drop a few pounds fast.

Today, I provide you with a few tips on how to incorporate negative calorie fruits and foods into your diet.

Substitute Sweets, Fried Snacks and Soft Drinks with Negative Calorie Fruits

I particularly like the following negative calorie fruits for the reasons listed:

Strawberries are recognized as having more vitamin C than some citrus fruits. They are also high in fiber, folate, potassium and antioxidants, making them a natural means of reducing the chances of heart disease, high blood pressure and certain cancers.

Oranges are sweet and tasty fruits that make an excellent substitute for sweet, high-calorie snacks. They are high in Vitamin C as well as folic acid. Oranges also contain antioxidants, which can help fight heart disease, cancer, and other health conditions.

Grapefruit is low in sodium and has high water content. It helps to flush out excess water, and it increases the metabolism thus aiding in weight loss. It is a rich source of vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin C, niacin, calcium, and iron.

Apples are a popular natural snack. Apples are low in fat and sodium. Like grapefruit, apples help to flush excess water out of the body. They are an excellent source of fiber, and are rich in antioxidants -- this can help prevent heart disease and cancer. Eating apples can even help reduce cholesterol levels. The skin of the apple contains quite a few nutrients, so you reap more health benefits if you eat apples unpeeled.

Cranberries are an excellent source of powerful antioxidants. They are high in Vitamin C and manganese. Cranberries can even defend against bacteria such as E. Coli. Cranberries act as a diuretic to remove excess water from the body. They are also a natural laxative and can prevent the development of bacteria that causes urinary tract infections.

How to Do This:

1) You can eat the fruits as they are.

But there are people who do not like to eat fruits....so try this instead.

2) Make a smoothie!

Invest in a simple blender, you do not need to get an expensive juicer. I like to get ALL the nutrients from the fruit, so I tend to ingest the bits that people discard. Throw in the fruits into the blender, add ice-cubes and blend. You can add milk or yogurt, if you want. But doing so will add calories to the smoothie. And remember not to add sugar. It may take some getting used to, but the fruits above do have their own natural sweetness.

Incorporating Negative Calorie Food in Meals

You should plan on replacing one regular meal with a meal made from negative calorie foods. I would recommend eating a negative calorie meal during dinner. why? It is preferable to not have a heavy meal in the night. And it is also preferable to not eat at least two hours before bed-time. Sleeping with a heavy stomach is a sure way to put on weight, and that is not what is desired.

You would have noticed from the previous article, that most of the negative calorie foods are vegetables. An easy way to incorporate negative calorie foods would be to do soups. Soups are also filling and tasty. Another way is to grill the negative calorie foods.

Here are some examples to help you get started on creating your own negative calorie recipes based on the list I provided in the previous article.

Negative Calorie Food Recipes

Lentil Spinach Vegetable Recipe

Ingredients

One cup mung lentil (with skin)
One cup spinach, finely chopped
One tomato, chopped
One green chili, chopped
One inch ginger, grated
One clove garlic, crushed
Half teaspoon coriander or parsley leaves, finely chopped
Two teaspoon fresh lime/ lemon juice
3-4 cups water
¾ teaspoon red chili powder
¾ teaspoon black peeper powder or to taste
Salt to taste

Procedure

Wash mung lentil thoroughly. Soak in water for about one hour. Take a deep non stick skillet and put all the ingredients. Once the water boils, cover 3/4 of the skillet with a lid and let the ingredients cook till the lentil becomes soft, about 20 minutes.

Hearty Tomato Soup

Ingredients

Fresh Tomatoes
Garlic
Ginger
Olive oil
Salt to taste

Procedure

Chop fresh tomatoes, garlic and ginger. Place in a pot, add a little olive oil and water. Then heat. Stir regularly and allow to thicken. Once the tomatoes are cooked, pour into a blender. Blend until smooth. Add salt to taste.

Grilled Eggplant

Ingredients

Eggplant
Olive oil
Garlic
Salt

Procedure

Slice eggplant lengthwise. Mix olive oil, crushed garlic and salt to make into a paste. Brush the paste onto the eggplant. Grill the eggplant using broiler setting on your oven. Otherwise, you can simply bake the eggplant, or place in a flat pan and heat.

Vegetable Soup

Ingredients

green cabbage, cut into 1 inch pieces
onion, peeled and diced
carrots, peeled and sliced
celery, sliced
turnips, peeled and cut into cubes
zucchini, peeled and cut into cubes
cans green beans
beef stock or chicken stock OR tomato juice and water

Procedure

Combine all ingredients in a stock pot and bring to a boil. Add water, if needed, to cover all vegetables. Reduce heat to a moderate simmer and cover. Cook about 1 hour, or until all vegetables are tender.
